in the photo project «PETERSBURG SLANG»
It is really unusual case: five photographers at once managed to create an exhibition project without internal contradictions, even though creative writings of the authors significantly distinguish from each other! What does it takes to get this integrity, and why the fact that black-and-white and color photographs are demonstrated in one exhibition space does not cause irritation?
First of all, it is a successful name of the project, and exactly this condition (that very important in group exhibitions) determines the rules of the game «author-viewer» and is the key to enter the world created by the author (s).
The word «slang» takes our perception away from the postcard and ceremonial Saint-Petersburg and gives photographers almost unlimited freedom of expression.
Everyone, no doubt, has their own Saint-Petersburg. However, it is undeniable that Saint- Petersburg is a city-introvert and its self absorption, thoughtfulness, «foggy» lack of expression cannot be avoided in any originality of author’s writing.
Photographers could feel and reflect this visual tonality in their works. This tonality became one a distinguished feature of the project, which is why it is considered a self-sufficient, capacious and complete.
